The Australian Department of Human Services has appointed law firm Minster Ellison as legal advisor for the forthcoming Australian smartcard implementation, a combined health and social services access card to be introduced from 2008.

Minter Ellison Legal Group Chief Executive Officer Guy Templeton said the firm would be assigning specialist lawyers both locally and internationally to work on the project.

Templeton said the team has experience working on a "large number of significant technology products, including card projects, in Australia and Hong Kong."

The team will be led by Oliver Barrett, partner and head of the technology practice and will draw additional support from international law firm Herbert Smith LLP.

The team members will include Minter Ellison partner Russell Miller and Herbert Smith LLP partner Christopher Rees.
