LED Stairway Automatically Treats You Like Royalty

16.03.2011
Ever needed to get up in the middle of the night, only to struggle to find the light switch for the hallway? Or maybe you didn't want to wake family members with bright light? Or maybe you ascend or descend your stairs and wonder where your own red carpet is? The won't really give you a red-carpet moment, but it will make your home look amazing.

This mod runs using two sensory infrared "beams"--a lower beam for the bottom step and another at the top of the stairs. These infrared beams will detect when something interrupts them (like feet), and will light the stairs light up. After a 15 second delay, the lights will then automatically turn off. The lights are blue LEDs, with two on each step (it looks like four in the picture due to the glossy finish on the stairs).

to see how impressive this mod looks in dark lighting conditions.

If you want to try this but don't have easy access to the stairwell's sides, don't be deterred -- the modder in the video had the same problem. He installed thin wood channels over the wiring for the lights, stained to match the wood of the stairs.

If you are ready to give this mod a try, has the kit you need to get started. If only these lights came as custom in every house, there may be less problems trying to reach the bathroom in the dark...
