Intel licenses Nvidia's SLI for X58 motherboards

PCs based on Intel's high-end Core i7 processors and motherboards are getting a graphics boost. The chip maker has licensed Nvidia's SLI graphics technology, which allows a computer to use multiple graphics boards simultaneously.

The deal brings support to Intel's , also known by its former code name, Smackover. Designed for gaming PCs based on Intel's Core i7 processor, the DX58S0 uses Intel's X58 chipset and offers support for faster DDR3 memory.

SLI support will allow the DX58SO to run multiple Nvidia GeForce graphics chips simultaneously, which gives users a significant boost in graphics performance. The motherboards already support Advanced Micro Devices' technology, which does the same thing with its own line of ATI graphics chips.

Besides Intel, other motherboard makers also offer X58-based boards with SLI support, such as Asustek Computer's .
