IBM Corp. on Tuesday bolstered its mainframe-based software strategy, rolling out an improved suite of Tivoli-based systems management tools to be part of an infrastructure management solution for its zSeries.

The new solution, called the IBM Tivoli Omegamon XE, is intended to better allow IT administrators to actively detect, isolate, and repair application performance problems within their IT infrastructure. IBM has crafted the suite using a common architecture, thereby allowing the products to be more tightly integrated, have a common interface, and to contain more comprehensive monitoring features, according to company officials.

The suite contains products that monitor and manage zSeries operating systems and subsystems, including the z/OS, Unix System Services, DB2, zSeries networks, storage, WebSphere Application Server, and the WebSphere Integration Brokers

Another benefit to the solution is it serves to ensure that applications are running as efficiently as they can with capacity planning products that help predict future technology needs. The new suite, which combines its own technology with that it acquired from Candle, is a step toward offering users a zero-downtime environment by bringing to bear workload management and a number of automation solutions, company officials claim.

"As a business partner, we see the combined IBM Tivoli and Candle systems management offering enables us to reach a broader set of customers," said Ken LoCascio, a vice president at Vicom Infinity. "We believe this one (Tivoli Omegamon XE) presents a beneficial collection of systems management products to customers," he said.
