Hitman Absolution Unveiled

10.05.2011
Square Enix has unveiled the first teaser for the fifth in the Hitman series, offering some tantalizing clues as to what Agent 47 might be up to next.

It's been a while since we saw a new Hitman game, with the last one, Blood Money, showing up in 2006 for PC, PS2, Xbox and Xbox 360. We at GamePro, giving it a healthy four stars.

Now, it seems, the wait is finally over. The fifth game in the series, Hitman Absolution, has been confirmed by IO Interactive and Square Enix.

The game once again casts players in the role of Agent 47, who finds himself "at the center of a dark conspiracy" in a "corrupt and twisted world." The game promises to take Agent 47 "on a personal journey which allows us to explore other parts of the Hitman fantasy," according to game director Tore Blystad. "This is both a familiar and yet significantly different experience from other Hitman games," he says. "Something our silent assassins will relish, as will all those new to the Hitman world."

The game features its own proprietary engine named Glacier 2 and promises "completely new features never seen before in the Hitman franchise." No word on exactly what those might be yet, though.

The teaser trailer released by Square Enix shows a barcode which reads "110706040147", with the 47 highlighted. "47" is obviously a reference to Agent 47, series protagonist. But what of the other numbers? Well, it so happens that June 7 2011 (11/07/06 in YY/DD/MM date format) is the first day of E3. And Square Enix tells us that the game will be showcased "by invitation only" at E3 this year.
