Google execs take $1 salary, dentist sues over review

A couple of quick comments on the news, one on Google's brass taking a buck in salary for 2008 and a dentist being allow to pursue legal action against a couple for posting a negative review about her on Yelp.

Indeed, dentist Dr. Yvonne Wong who was reviewed has every right to sue. I wonder how I would react if I got dinged or worse defamed on a site that reviewed journalists. Or any site for that matter. I'd want the record put straight, too. A couple claimed their became light-headed after a cavity was filled with a material containing mercury, says the in part based on a story in . The review appears to no longer be on Yelp.

There's more here than meets the eye given that the story says Yelp's CEO has had to defend itself against charges that his sales people would take money to squelch negative reviews. The larger point is that writing user reviews empowers consumers in the digital era. How come we never here about such disputes arising from Amazon user reviews? No doubt user reviews are being scanned more carefully than ever now.

One would hope the lawsuit doesn't dampen legitimate user reviews. Yelp, which is not part of the suit, addresses negative reviews in its .

As for Google CEO Eric Schmidt and founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page each taking a buck in salary last year as reported in , they set an example. But they are already so obscenely wealthy, their salary largesse rings a bit hollow. I suppose they've earned it, but does anyone deserve that much wealth?

Yes. This is America. Do a great job and reap the rewards as long as you spread the wealth. And they hold it in their own company's stock, not cash, hedge funds, credit default swap receivables or Krugerrands.
