The band, which they have named Rootkit, has been short-listed on Gidol, an international online competition Googleidol.com is running in search of the world's best musicians.

'Patch Me Up', the song responsible for the quartet's fame, is a parody of secure network technology and found success under the appropriate category of "original".

Band members Paul 'Fabienne' Ceccato, Mark 'Goodchilde' Greenwood, John 'Singin-Cox QC' Zvonar and Matt 'Finnish' Waples said although they won't quit their day jobs, they intend to enjoy their 15 minutes of fame that most IT developers only dream of."We are so serious about computer security in our day job that we wanted to take a lighter approach to something that we work so hard on," frontman Waples said.

While they have achieved an idol status at their workplace Altiris Australia, they don't intend to release an album, but will continue to grace the industry with technology-based music.

Geoff Masters, CEO of Altiris Asian Pacific/Japan, said they are a hit at the company whether they achieve Gidol status or not.
