Gamescom: The Witcher 2 2.0 Out September 29

18.08.2011
The talented team at CD Projekt Red hasn't been resting on its laurels and counting its money following the release of the really rather good The Witcher 2. No; they've continued post-release support with a variety of free DLC, patches that improved the most-criticized issues, and active engagement with the community.

September 29 sees the biggest update to the game yet -- so big that it's going up a whole version number. The Witcher 2 Version 2.0 brings with it a host of enhancements to gameplay and an impressive amount of new content.

For new players, a more extensive tutorial system has been added to walk them through their difficult first hours as Geralt of Rivia. Experienced players will be able to ignore this, but those who struggled with what to do and how to go about it in the early hours will be catered to by this change.

A more substantial addition comes in the form of new difficulty setting "Dark Mode." This, apparently, is almost as tough as Insanity mode, but allows players to save the game rather than featuring permadeath. It also offers a twist on the standard campaign, however, with a variety of new "Dark" equipment and some non-specific new "Dark" features. The first person to beat Dark Mode when the new patch releases will receive a prize, too.

Perhaps the most significant new addition is the Arena mode. This allows a combat-focused arcade-like experience where Geralt is thrown into combat against waves of enemies -- some of which include characters from the main plot -- and tasked with simply surviving as long as possible. There will be leaderboards and the ability to share scores to both Facebook and the game's forums for a bit of friendly competition. Not only does it look like fun, but it will provide a convenient training arena for those struggling to get to grips with the game's unforgiving but rewarding combat system.

The Witcher 2 2.0 will be delivered via automatic update on September 29, and will be completely free, as with all previous updates. The additional features will be incorporated into the upcoming Xbox 360 version as standard, too.
