this week unveiled a copper version of its 10 Gigabit Ethernet top-of-rack data center switch.

Extreme's 10GBASE-T-compliant Summit X650 switch uses existing RJ-45 cabling for server connectivity spanning 55 to 100 meters. It is tested compatible with server network interface cards (NIC) from Intel.

NICs and switches compliant with 10GBASE-T could lower the entry point cost of 10 Gigabit Ethernet in data centers, Extreme says. Extreme claims to be first to market among major switch vendors with a 10GBASE-T system.

The switch itself sports 24 10GBASE-T ports. It is priced at US$19,995 and is available this month.

An of the X650 is already shipping.
