Do the Japanese Prefer Vita 3G or the Wi-Fi Only Version?

17.10.2011
The Vita won't be out until 2012 in the States, but Sony's new handheld is now available for preorder in Japan. And if one set of retailer numbers is indicative of broader trends, it's the 3G version that's the most popular.

Retailer and blogger recently tweeted that 65 percent of his customers opted to purchase the 3G version of the Vita, compared to the 35 percent for the wi-fi only version (via ). Interesting choice given that the 3G version costs $50 more than the wi-fi only version, and requires a data plan to use to its full extent.

Another interesting revelation is that Vita purchasers aren't really purchasing games. Sinobi reports that the software to system ratio is currently 0.57. At a guess, many Vita owners are opting to simply download their games from the PlayStation Store instead.

We'll get a better idea of the Vita's sales trends when it arrives in Japan on December 17. Look for it in North America on January 12.
