Dead Island Racks Up 1 Million Units Shipped in Just a Week

It looks like a rough PC launch and some unfortunate gender-bashing didn't affect sales of for the worse, as publisher Deep Silver reports that the game has successfully shipped a million copies in just a week.

Dead Island didn't have the smoothest launch, either -- it ultimately didn't live up to the hype , the PC version had , and the infamous buried in the source code gave the title some bad press. Yet, Dead Island is still selling just fine, thanks to above-average reviews (we gave it a ) and a genuinely different take on the survival horror genre. Keep in mind, that's one million copies shipped, which means retailer demand. I'm sure that we'll be hearing about it when Dead Island actually sells a million copies in the near future.

From the official press release:

"We're thrilled at the retail reception Dead Island has achieved in its first few days'" said Geoff Mulligan, Chief Operating Officer at Deep Silver, "The critical 'first week' of game sales has been an enormous sales success for Deep Silver. We're working quickly with our distribution partner in North America, Square Enix?, to restock shelves as quickly as we can."

"With more than a million copies sold, I feel good knowing that the world is now more prepared than ever for what to do should a real zombie invasion ever threaten humanity." said Mike Fischer, president and CEO of Square Enix, Inc.

Also, the multiplayer co-op probably doesn't hurt -- it's the preferred mode for many people, and multiple copies of the game are the best way do it.
