X1 updates enterprise desktop search product

X1 Technologies on Monday released an upgrade to its enterprise desktop search tool, adding new capabilities for remote server management, integration with Interwoven's WorkSite 8.0, and a set of SDKs for extending the search platform to other applications.

When desktop search is deployed in the enterprise, tools must be secure and easy for IT administrators to manage, according to Jeff Kupietzky, vice president of marketing at X1.

To that end, the 2.5 version of X1 Enterprise Edition adds a Cluster Manager feature that allows X1 Servers to be deployed in a cluster for increased scalability, manageability, and performance. Cluster Manager also lets administrators remotely install and manage X1 Servers and provides central management for the deployment of large scale installations. It also aids in data access management and control of security requirements.

In addition, the new version's server architecture was rewritten into Java for better scalability and support for heterogeneous environments, said Kupietzky.

Another consideration in development of Version 2.5 was the growing need for enterprise workers to search for information regardless of its location, he said.

The Enterprise Client feature gives a user a unified view of applications and data on both the desktop and the corporate network. This feature provides a federated view of local and enterprise content and lets users take action on search results within the context of the application where the data resides.

The Content Connector for Interwoven links to the Interwoven WorkSite 8.0 data repository and federates the results with local and server-based content, according to X1 officials.

The new SDKs in X1 Enterprise Edition 2.5 are the X1 Server SDK, which allows X1 to be connected to custom data sources, and the X1 Client SDK, for customizing the user interface and for integrating search results into applications and business processes.

Pricing starts at US$15,000 per year, which includes the X1 Enterprise Server, Cluster Manager, Content Connectors, and Deployment Manager.
