Top Story: Microsoft says more core Kinect titles on the way

08.03.2011
Core gamers have often criticized Kinect for its "casual-friendly" software lineup. This morning's Top Story is Microsoft's assertion it won't always be that way.

Microsoft's senior producer Kevin Unangst is keen to set core gamers' minds at rest: more Kinect titles to cater to the "hardcore" audience are on the way, with Child of Eden merely the tip of the iceberg.

"There are many [hardcore games] coming," Unangst commented to CVG at Microsoft's spring showcase earlier this month. "We've got Child of Eden, we've got Twisted Pixel's Gunstringer... and certainly you're going to see more."

Unangst is keen to ensure that Kinect support isn't just a gimmick, though. He wants it to be an "organic and natural" part of the game.

"We did not go out and say 'we're just going to slap Kinect on and put that out there'," he said. "We don't want a bunch of add-ons -- it's got to make sense in light of the game."

Good news for anyone fearful that "Enhanced with Kinect" titles will be gimmicky hand-waving experiences, hopefully. Unangst pointed out that there's more to Kinect than just controller-free waggling, despite what people might think:

"There's a whole host of things, whether it's voice control, face recognition and all the tech that Kinect makes possible. Now that we've got it in the hands of developers, you're going to see more and more core games. This is just the beginning."

Microsoft's will also promote homebrew development and hopefully end up filtering some creativity into high-profile development teams. Although Kinect has been a commercial success with the "mainstream" market so far, hardcore gamers still need some convincing of the technology's viability.
