Half of Hong Kong consumers indicated they are likely to purchase a tablet this year, said market research firm TNS that announced its latest survey results Monday.

According to TNS, 17 percent of Hong Kong consumers claim to own a tablet -- nearly six times the global average -- and that another 50 percent of the territory's consumers are likely to purchase a tablet.

The market research company noted that 27 percent of respondents will replace their PCs with tablets, with 27 percent claiming they may purchase a tablet to replace a PC.

However, the majority--at 61 percent--consider the tablet they may purchase an additional device, indicating that the tablet will grow the total device market.

Of those surveyed, more than 50 percent said they would rather read ebooks on the tablet, compared to 21 percent who preferred PCs and 15 percent who preferred mobile phones, said TNS.

In addition, 33 percent preferred to access games via the tablet, compared to 28 percent who preferred the PCs and 26 percent who favored mobiles, TNS noted.

Despite the gains being made by the tablet, PCs still hold dominance as the preferred device in Hong Kong for banking, email and browsing on the Internet, said TNS, adding that mobile phones are the preferred devices for music, navigation and Bluetooth applications.
