Sybase Philippines targets non-database markets

Sybase Philippines is looking to extend its market beyond selling database software to other areas like business intelligence and automated mobile workforce systems.

The company grew its revenues by 40 percent to more than US$2 million in 2005, citing customer wins in local companies like mobile operator Globe Telecom, manufacturing firm Universal Robina Corporation (URC) and shipping company Sulpicio Lines.

This year, the company aims to double its revenues to US$4 million, having already surpassed the $1 million mark in the first quarter, said Benjamin Henares, president of Sybase Solutions Corporation, said in an interview Thursday.

Henares credits the revenue growth to the company's move to go beyond selling its core relational database and client-server software, adding that for this year alone, he expects at least 60 percent of revenues to come from sales of business intelligence solutions.

Sybase carries a data warehousing solution called Sybase IQ, which, according to Henares, works with solutions from competing vendors like Oracle and SAS. Through data "compression," Sybase said the product can cut storage costs by up to 70 percent.

Globe Telecom, for one, uses Sybase solutions to mine data from its various "programs" or mobile services. "Our solutions allow them to determine whether the company (Globe) is making money within days after rolling out a particular program," said Henares.

URC, on the other hand, is using Sybase software to Web-enable its sales distribution system. For its "field force automation" solutions, Henares said Sybase is targeting local logistics companies.

"We segment our market now into type of use, based on the solutions we offer, and not so much anymore by industry," he said.

Established as a locally-owned company in 2002, Sybase Solutions Corp. is the sole distributor of Sybase in the Philippines.
