PS3, Halo 3: ODST top Sept. sales charts

The September 2009 NPD video game sales report has just been released, and it looks like the and introduction of the is still working wonders for Sony's home console, as the PlayStation 3 outsold the Wii in September of 2009, by almost 30,000 units, selling 491,800 consoles to Nintendo's 462,800. It's worth noting that the occurred on September 27, giving the system just a week of lower-priced sales compared to the entire month. The Nintendo DS was still the top selling system for the month with 524,200 sold. Here is the entire hardware rankings for September.

On the software side, Halo 3: ODST was the big winner, pulling in over 1.5 million units sold and tripling its nearest competitor, despite coming out three weeks into September. While it's not at the level of 's first month sales of over 3 million, it's still more than enough to win the month by a large margin. The Beatles: Rock Band, released a week after Guitar Hero 5, was still able to beat its music-game competitor despite boasts to the contrary from Activision (via ), as well as promised with purchase. The PS3 version of Batman: Arkham Asylum flipped the script on the , which outsold it in August, most likely due to the large influx of new PS3 owners during September. Other games entering the charts this month were Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2. Here are the software results:
