Through an agreement with the Central Local Government Region of South Australia, a body which represents 15 councils, Internode's infrastructure arm Agile Communications will roll out communication equipment that puts broadband within the reach of 80,000 residents.
When combined with current projects, Internode's broadband infrastructure will cover a vast area of rural SA from the coast through to the Victorian border.
This includes the Coorong district, the Yorke Peninsula and Port Augusta.
Internode has pioneered the use of solar-powered radio towers to deliver broadband to locations that otherwise would miss out on this facility due to small populations.
Internode is also on track to expand its broadband infrastructure in the next 12 months to cover the Riverland, the Murraylands, and other large areas of the state.
This central region project, which is likely to cost more than A$3.5 million (US$2.68 million), has the support of the Australian Government's Broadband Connect funding program, the SA government and councils in the region.
Internode managing director Simon Hackett said the organization will deploy a mix of ADSL2+ and wireless broadband.
"Building broadband infrastructure is not for the faint-hearted as it's a long-term investment," he said.
Member councils of the region include: Barunga West; Clare and Gilbert Valleys; Copper Coast; Flinders Ranges; Goyder; Mallala; Mount Remarkable; Northern Areas; Orroroo/Carrieton; Peterborough; Port Pirie; and Wakefield.
Internode also intends to extend the broadband network to the mining township of Leigh Creek.
Central local government region executive officer Anita Crisp said broadband was becoming an essential service for businesses as more people started to buy, learn and interact online.
"Broadband is a vital tool for economic development, particularly in regional areas, and the state government's Broadband SA initiative has provided wonderful support in developing this project," she said.
