IDC: Symantec leads in security and storage

Security firm Symantec leads the security and storage software market in Malaysia as well as Asia Pacific & Japan (APJ), according to analyst firm IDC, which does customised reports for technology providers.

Citing findings from IDC, Suzie Tan, managing director of Symantec Malaysia, said that her company led the storage software market in 2008, and garnered the highest market share in key storage software categories. "Seventy per cent market share in data protection and recovery software, and 49 per cent in storage infrastructure software," Tan said. "Symantec also leads the security software market in Malaysia with 25 per cent share in 2008."

Symantec APJ senior vice president, Bernard Kwok, added that IDC's Asia/Pacific and Japan Semiannual Software Tracker H2 2008 showed that Symantec was the clear market share leader in key IDC storage software categories in APJ. "Data protection and recovery software, with a 30 per cent market share in 2008 as calculated by IDC," he said. "[That is] twice that of [our] next largest competitor. In storage infrastructure software, a 26 per cent market share was reported. Symantec also continues to lead the security software market with a 16 per cent share in the region."

"Symantec's position as a leader in both the security and storage software markets in Asia Pacific and Japan attests to the performance of our broad portfolio of solutions and our deep commitment to serving the needs of our customers," said Kwok. "Across the region, organisations continue to turn to Symantec to help them secure and manage their information-driven world against more risks at more points, more completely and efficiently than with any other company."

Symantec APJ's vice president of sales and engineering, Vic Mankotia, said that in a dynamic environment, constant attention was needed in many areas, especially that of mobile security.

"Symantec's approach to dealing with mobile security is far more holistic and advanced [than what's generally available]," said Mankotia. "Today's increasingly mobile workforce has resulted in more workers using a wide range of devices to access corporate data. From an endpoint security perspective, that has profound implications. Unfortunately, while many enterprises are using smartphones in their business today, few of them are taking sufficient measures to protect them."

"This can expose them to several key risks such as [those associated with] compliance, data and privacy, and lost phones and mobile threats. [These] place customer data, financial data, and other confidential data at risk," he said.

"In the case of smartphones, Symantec Mobile Security Suite protects these devices against malicious threats and unauthorised access to sensitive corporate information by using antivirus technology, an advanced firewall, password enforcement, phone feature control, and encryption technology," said Mankotia. "This helps ensure both the protection of mobile assets and compliance with regulatory requirements. When used with the Symantec Mobile VPN, the Symantec Mobile Security Suite also helps ensure that only secure, policy-compliant mobile devices are able to access the corporate network via the VPN."
