Hong Kong industries improve supply chain efficiency

Industries in Hong Kong have vigorously adopted innovative technology to enhance supply chain efficiency and to maintain competitiveness.

This announcement was recently made by Rita Lau, the secretary for commerce and economic development who addressed a gathering at the 10th GS1 Hong Kong Supply Chain Management Excellence Summit on 5 November 2010.

The theme of the summit was "Revitalising our Supply Chain to Accelerate Growth".

Hong Kong is one of the world's leading trade and logistics hubs, according to Lau who said it has achieved encouraging success in the past decades because of its unique geographical position, efficient infrastructure and well-trained and highly qualified workforce.

However, Lau emphasised the need to continually improve in order to sustain its leading position and encouraged the use of collective wisdom to identify areas that they can do even better.

Today, industries in Hong Kong are using technologies such as RFID and sensor networks and these are widely used in tracking the location and conditions of goods along efficient international supply chains.

Experts at the 10th GS1 Hong Kong Supply Chain Management Excellence Summit shared how the latest technologies can enhance their company's supply chain, making it more flexible, cost-effective and responsive.

Lau said Hong Kong must make it easy for traders to connect to the logistics networks and this process depends on factors such as business-to-government trade procedures, information communications technology infrastructure, and trade-related support services. Let's have a look at how Hong Kong fares in these areas.

Hong Kong has one of the most sophisticated and successful telecommunications infrastructure in the world, said Lau noting that it has about 100 per cent broadband coverage.

Currently, there are more than 12 million mobile service subscribers in the city and among these over four million are 3G/3.5G service customers. Also, the city has more than 8,900 public wi-fi hot spots in the city, and free wi-fi services are available for public access in 380 government premises.

This robust telecommunications infrastructure of Hong Kong is a key enabler for the trade and logistics industry, said Lau.
