Ghana's rLG Communications steps into Nigerian market

Ghanaian mobile-phone assembling company rLG Communications has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Osun State government in western Nigeria, marking the company's first step into the region's largest market.

Under this agreement, rLG will replicate its Applied ICT Module of National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP), which was implemented in Ghana and Gambia last year, to benefit more than 20,000 youth from the Nigerian state.

A statement from rLG says the deal is worth more than US$10 million and that it will involve the engagement of technical experts, equipment, tools and the setting up of training facilities across the state.

However, apart from developing youth skills in mobile telephony and thus creating several jobs, rLG will also use the opportunity to expand the market for its mobile phones.

"Upon the roll out of the project," the statement added, "the company shall commence the construction of US$20 million assembly plant in Osun State and other offices in Lagos State to commence full commercial activities within the shortest possible time."

Formerly known as Roagam Links, rLG Communications is the first privately owned company in the region that has embarked on a youth training program for mobile-phone servicing, repair, assembling and sales. It recently opened Ghana's first high-tech laptop and mobile assembly plant.

The Nigerian project has been touted as a giant step in rLG's bid to become a leading integrated ICT company in West Africa within the next two years by capturing 80 percent of the regional market.
