Privacy statement of IDG Business Media GmbH

We, IDG Business Media GmbH, take the protection of your personal data very seriously. To us, the protection of your private sphere is of utmost significance. We consider compliance with the statutory provisions (e.g. German Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG) and German Telemedia Act (TMG)) as a matter of course. We would like to briefly explain how we protect your data and what it means for you when you provide us with personal data below.

1. What are personal data?

Personal data is of information on the basis of which your identity can be established, such as your name, address, and telephone number. It does not include information as to which page of our offer is accessed from a particular IP address or which browser a server uses to access our offer.

2. Does IDG Business Media GmbH collect personal data?

IDG Business Media GmbH only collects necessary personal data for purposes that you permit. In some cases, we are under a legal obligation to save the e-mail addresses of all users who make submissions to our online forums. You are therefore required to sign up before you can make submissions to the forums.

We also ask you for personal data when you participate in prize draws or send us inquiries. For these purposes, we need at least your e-mail address. For prize draws, we actively ask you for your approval for sending you advertising. Eligibility for prize draws does not depend on such approval. Additional details are required when you order online products or subscriptions or when we are to send you prizes. You can visit all areas of the site and read the submissions in the online forums without disclosing personal data. However, this does not apply to detailed views in the premium zone, which require a special subscription. If you subscribe to newsletters, we will send you editorial contents as well as information and offers concerning our products and those of our partners. We will not forward your address to any third parties. When using newsletters, the opening and click behaviour is recorded. These data are stored separately from personal data. Moreover, please note your right of revocation as specified in section 10.

3. What happens to the stored personal data?

We only disclose stored e-mail addresses at the request of the police or prosecutors or after obtaining a written or electronic declaration of consent. By means of their personal settings, all online forum users can prevent their e-mail addresses from being displayed. We store other personal data that you give us in connection with product orders, inquiries, or the delivery of prizes on protected computers in Germany. We use the data exclusively for purposes that you approve and designate in advance.

All our employees are under the obligation to maintain confidentiality pursuant to Section 5 of the German Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG). We have taken technical and organisational measures in accordance with Section 9 of the German Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG) to protect your data and make sure that our partners also take suitable data security protection measures.

4. What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that can be stored on a web page visitor's hard disk. They enable you to personalise web site settings. Moreover, we use cookies to analyse the use of web pages and especially of online advertising in anonymised or pseudonymised form, to identify general preferences of a user and to present special offers and services to the user on the web pages in line with his preferences. In the case of online surveys, these data may be enhanced with further demographic details (e.g. age and gender). Such cases are explicitly indicated in the online surveys. Other uses include the creation of anonymous user statistics for market research purposes. However, none of the ad customers are provided with data that would enable the identification of a particular person. Use of our offers is also possible without cookies, though in this case not all functions can be used. By default, most browsers are configured to automatically accept cookies. If you wish, you can deactivate the saving of cookies or configure your browser in such a way that it alerts you when sending cookies. Cookies are not programs and are therefore unable to cause damage on your PC. For technical reasons, submissions to the online forum or login to the premium zone are not possible unless you accept cookies on your computer. However, you can automatically delete these cookies when you exit the forum by clicking "Logout".

Please note that there is also the possibility for an opt-out: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout/

5. Behavioural Advertising

On our websites, advertisements from our marketing partners are shown on our behalf. In connection with these advertisements, our marketing partners may potentially place cookies on your computer or call up cookies already stored there. The information about your visit to this website, e.g. the number of times the ad was clicked on (but not your name, address or any other personal data) is saved in order to generate content that is tailored to you.

The process described above – also known as Behavioural Targeting – is operated by us and also, in part, by third-party companies, who also operate advertisements for the websites of other suppliers. These companies then use the cookies to generate the aforementioned behavioural profiles themselves and apply their respective targeting systems to these in order to select from the data gathered for the purposes of user-targeted advertising.

You have the option to reject such targeting at any time by adjusting your opt-out-cookie setting. Our partner, GroupM, provides an opt-out option under the following link: http://www.xaxis.com/de/page/privacy-policy/

Facebook Retargeting

Our websites potentially use the retargeting functions (Custom Audiences) of Facebook, 1601 South California Avenue, Palo Alto, CA 94304, USA. When visiting our website, a direct connection between your browser and the Facebook server is generated via retargeting tags. This provides Facebook with the information that you have visited this website with your IP address. This enables Facebook to associate your visit of the site with your Facebook user account. The information thus gained may be utilised for placing Facebook ads. We would like to point out that the owner of this website does not obtain any knowledge about the content of the data transmitted or its use by Facebook.

You can find more information about this in Facebook’s data protection declaration at http://www.facebook.com/about/privacy. If you do not wish your data to be gathered through Custom Audience, you can deactivate Custom Audiences in your personal profile at http://www.youronlinechoices.com.

Twitter Retargeting

Our websites potentially use the retargeting functions (Tailored Audiences) of Twitter Inc., 1355 Market Street Suite 900, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA. We can use this function to address visitors to this website with personalised advertising that is tailored to their interests when they visit Twitter. To analyse website use, on which the interest-related adverts are based, Twitter uses so-called tags. Visits to a website and data relating to its use are collected via these tags. If a user visits a website that contains a tag, Twitter places a cookie onto the user’s browser. The unique ID of this cookie is recorded and integrated into the target group for remarketing purposes by Twitter. Next time you visit Twitter, you will be shown ads that are highly likely to reflect product and information content that you looked at previously.

If you do not want to receive targeted advertising on Twitter, you can deactivate this function on Twitter. You can find out more about this here. In addition, Twitter supports the "Do Not Track (DNT)” option. If you activate the DNT option in your browser, Twitter will not assign browser-related information to your account for the purposes of tailored advertising. You can find more information about DNT and how you can activate this option in your browser here.

6. Web analysis/social media services

In part, we use Google Analytics on our websites, a web analysis service by Google Inc. ("Google"). Google Analytics uses so-called "cookies", text files that are stored on your computer and which allow your use of the website to be analysed. The information generated by the cookie about your use of the website (including your IP address) is transmitted to a Google server in the USA, where it is stored. Google uses this information in order to analyse your use of the website, to compile reports about website activities for the website operator, and to provide further services connected with the use of the website and the use of the internet.

Google may also forward this information onto third parties, in as far as this is a legal requirement or in as far as third parties are processing such data on behalf of Google. Google does not, however, connect your IP address with other Google data under any circumstances. You can prevent the installation of cookies by changing your browser software settings; we must, however, point out that if you do so you may not be able to use all functions of this website to their full extent. By visiting the website you are giving your consent to the data collected about you by Google being processed in the aforementioned way and for the aforementioned purpose.

So-called social media services have been integrated into our website. These enable you to recommend products on our website to others. These are solely integrated on our website in the form of links to the respective social media service. After clicking on the integrated icon, you will be transferred to the respective provider, i.e. only then will user information be transmitted to the respective provider. Information about how your personal data is handled when using their websites can be found in the respective data protection declaration of the individual provider.

We do not assume any responsibility or liability for the offers of third-party web sites. However, we will do our best to ensure that our partners observe data protection policies similar to ours.

8. Log files

For every request, the access data are saved to the server log.

The saved data record contains the following details:

9. Market research

We engage in market research and participate in studies of independent market research partners, such as Internet facts of AGOF e.V. (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Online Forschung), W3B studies of Fittkau & Maaß, or INFOnline. For some of these studies, a character sequence is stored in a cookie on your PC. This character sequence is generated randomly and is statistically unique. However, it cannot be mapped to any specific person and is therefore anonymous. Such cookies are set for technical reasons and serve objectives such as the creation of market research studies, which provide insight on the use of Internet offers. We exclusively cooperate with partners who also take data protection seriously and who are committed to the provisions of the German Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG) and other statutory regulations in connection with data protection and who especially take suitable technical and organisational measures pursuant to Section 9 of the German Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG).

However, you can object to the use of the scalable central measurement system (SZM) by setting an opt-out cookie. To do this, click the following link: http://optout.ivwbox.de.

To assert your right of revocation, simply send an e-mail to datenschutz@idg.de. We will process your notice of revocation without delay. In this case, we will include your personal data in our "advertising blacklist" in order to make sure that you no longer receive any advertising. If you expressly request the data to be deleted, this can also be done, although in this case we cannot ensure that you will not receive any advertising within the scope of future campaigns.

11. Right to information

Pursuant to Section 34 of the German Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG), you are entitled to information. Information on the origin and recipients of the data will only be withheld if the need for protection of company secrecy has priority over the subject's need for information.

You can at all times request information, free of charge, on the data stored concerning your person. The information will be provided without delay in accordance with Section 34 of the German Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG) and will contain the data stored concerning you, also insofar as they refer to the origin of these data, the recipient, or categories of recipients to whom the data are forwarded, and the purpose of the storage.

If you have any questions, to request information, and to exercise your right of revocation, send an e-mail to datenschutz@idg.de. We reserve the right to provide information or answer questions in electronic form.

If you have any further questions on the subject of data protection, please contact datenschutz@idg.de. We reserve the right to amend this privacy statement at all times under consideration of statutory requirements.

We use a plug-in from Apester.com to create small surveys and quizzes. The anonymised results of these quizzes and surveys will be provided to Apester. For further information about the privacy policy of Apester please check http://apester.com/privacypolicy.pdf.
