Yahoo increases local content for Southeast Asia

Yahoo Inc. has taken on a localization strategy across Southeast Asia in a bid to capture markets that will remain loyal for the long-term. The company, which has been facing competition from the likes of Google, aims to be a one-stop Web destination that includes mobile Internet services.

The company announced this week that it plans to launch localized front pages for the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. For instance, the front page for a specific country will have increased local content -- available in the national language -- on news, entertainment, and sports. The search and mail facilities will also be in the local language.

'Yahoo local front pages provide a great starting point for users to find anything and everything they want on the Internet. Our services help users connect to share ideas, and information via PCs and mobile phones,' said Larry Jordan, product management director for Yahoo Southeast Asia.
