Symantec looks to expand Philippine user base

Following its merger with Veritas, Symantec Corp. is looking to expand its current market base in the Philippines as it integrates its security products with storage solutions from Veritas.

In a product briefing, Symantec announced an email security and availability solution set that incorporates Veritas back-up and recovery products, including NetBackup.

'As the new company evolves, we will continue to integrate our products,' said Sarah Schultz, Symantec's product marketing manager for Asia Pacific. After working on interoperability, Schultz said the company is currently in the process of integrating Symantec and Veritas product lines.

Locally, Symantec formally announced the merger last September. In the Philippines, the company's local representatives are hoping to capitalize on Symantec's existing user base to sell new products.

Symantec is also counting on a wider range of solutions to compete better with the like of EMC (for storage) or Trend Micro (for security). Vic Ciencia, Symantec Philippines' senior technical consultant, noted for example, that anti-spam software (part of the email security and availability solution set) compliments Veritas back-end solutions.

'A lot of users have already invested in firewall solutions and a lot of them are interested in some of these new solutions such as anti-spam. If they are able to reduce spam, it will make their storage infrastructure more efficient,' explained Ciencia, who was formerly part Veritas' local team prior to the merger.
