STORAGEDECISIONS - Cohesive data storage policies lacking

10.11.2005
While advancements in tiered storage technology have helped some users offload less-critical data from primary systems to cheaper secondary storage arrays, the vast majority of IT managers at the Storage Decisions conference said they still have no idea of the value of their companies' data and can't manage it in any automated way over its life cycle.

Laura Fucci, chief technology officer at the MGM Mirage hotel and casino chain, said her department manages 180TB of data on disk and has implemented a tiered storage infrastructure. But she said her company is still trying to do a better job at managing its storage.

Fucci was among several speakers at the conference who addressed issues around information life-cycle management and tiered storage.

'One problem we have at MGM Mirage is we don't have a storage [management] policy. We're going to tackle that next year,' Fucci said, adding that the company must also develop a policy for handling sensitive information, such as credit card numbers. 'The lawyers are compiling that information now.'

Fucci said her department is in the process of implementing Symantec Corp.'s Veritas Enterprise Vault software to archive e-mail this year and is planning on doing the same thing for the company's file systems next year.

'Information just keeps growing. Our demand for storage keeps growing. I'm not sure if we're ever ahead of the storage problem, but we're going to do something to keep up,' she said.
