Space Marine Multiplayer Has 1.8 Billion Ways to Customize

03.08.2011
Oh sure, your average shooter has a fair degree of customization. Customizing your gun's load-out, your secondary weapon, and maybe your grenade is pretty standard for games like Call of Duty, Alpha Protocol?, and Brink. But how many weapon/costume combinations can you really have? Several hundred? Maybe several thousand?

Thanks to the rich history of the Warhammer 40,000? universe, will offer players 1.8 Billion ways to customize their character in multiplayer. Everything from chapter to shoulder patches to weapon to class will be customizable in the new 3rd person shooter from developer Relic Entertainment and publisher THQ.

Fans of the classic table-top game and improving video game universe will likely drool over the level of depth that Space Marine offers. Want to play as a Space Wolf Assault Marine? No problem. Or are you a Chaos player who enjoys heavy ordinance like lascannons or heavy bolters? In the trailer, both seem like a reality. The bad news is that only two of the armies (Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines) seem to currently be in the multiplayer roster. Space Orks, Tyranids, Sisters of Battle?, Eldar and Dark Eldar are notably absent. Though if the Dawn of War? series is any cue, their inclusion may be only a matter of time.

The other notable element in the trailer is the pace of the combat-- unabashedly frenetic. The jet packs, explosions, and bloody melee combat all come together beautifully in a tornado of violence. Though it would have been nice to see the stealthier Scout class included to perhaps offer a slower-paced alternative to some players, the game unquestionably gets the look and feel of the Warhammer 40k? universe right.

While the trailer highlights the European release date, players in North America can expect to see this title on September 6th.
