Shark Tank: Cheaper ain't cheap

This small hospital is in the middle of a big expansion, and that means building out the network too, says a pilot fish working on the project.

"During the planning phase, we made as many recommendations as we could about getting the new area connected to our small IT room," fish says. "The contracts were made, and the plans showed that the contractor would run brand-new Cat 6 lines to our server room for the new addition."

"We naively thought everything would go smoothly."

Fast-forward a few months: Fish is walking past the telephone equipment room and sees dozens of cables coming into the room. Fish recognizes the cabling: Some of it is Cat 6 data cable.

Trouble is, the server room is 200 feet away from the phone room.

"When we ask the electricians why they are running the data lines to this room, they tell us it's too far to run the lines to the server room, as some of the longer lines are already over 250 feet," says fish.
