Probe continues of network attack at Naval War College

It has been nearly three weeks since the Newport, R.I.-based U.S. Naval War College's networks were taken offline after an apparent network intrusion was discovered. As of Wednesday, there was still no word on when it will be restored.

Lt. Col. Doug Gabos, a spokesman for the Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command in Norfolk, Va., said his forensics team was still investigating the intrusion detected on Nov. 16. Systems known to have been affected in the incident have been isolated and are being examined to "determine the extent of the intrusion," he said.

The unclassified network is used by students at the college and also supports its e-mail system. It was taken offline after the network intrusion was detected and has not been restored, he said. The college's main Web site was unavailable Wednesday evening.

Gabos did not provide details on what might have happened or who might be behind the intrusion, citing the ongoing investigation. Once the results of the investigation are in, a determination will be made on what other information might be released, he said.

"At this point, what we can say is that it was an isolated incident that has not affected any other [networks]," he said.

The college is taking steps to mitigate similar incidents by using enhanced network firewall technologies, he added.
