Plans for PS Vita's BioShock Not Fully Hatched

In June at E3, Ken Levine announced that his development team at Irrational Games was starting work on a BioShock game made for PlayStation Vita. Since then there has been little news about the project, which will mark the series' first trip into the handheld market.

Ben Gilbert recently caught up with Levine in New York City to talk about the currently untitled BioShock project, and it looks like the team is so early in their development process, even their director isn't sure where the direction of the game will go.

What we've had to go on so far is news that the Vita project will be its own original entry into the BioShock universe -- it won't be a port of BioShock or BioShock 2, nor will it be a handheld version of BioShock: Infinite. But Gilbert's interview revealed that even this might not turn out to be true.

While their current goal isn't to port any of the beefy home-console games, even Levine admits that things can always change. Despite this grain of salt, however, his explanation of their goal seems solid:

"I think for us, the idea we have is a really good expression on a platform like that [Vita]. It's a different goal. And it has to sort of have its own voice in the franchise. If it just feels like a quieter voice in the franchise, I don't think that works. For us."

Whether the former Massachusetts-based studio, presently working out of New York City, will be working on the game exclusively is still up in the air. With around 110 people on staff, the development team might need to reach out for help in handling the new project -- "There are never enough resources to do anything, you know? We're always stretched."
