Philippines a promising market for HD technology

Sony Philippines Inc. sees business potential in the Philippine market's growing audio-visual segment, attributing this to the country's "positive response to HD (high definition) technology."

"The Philippines has shown surprising growth in the HD market," said Hiroaki Kobayashi, president and managing director of Sony Philippines. According to Kobayashi, the Philippines has shown the highest distribution ratio of HD over non-HD products in Asia, overtaking other countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Although not necessarily meaning the Philippines is the biggest revenue-generator in the HD segment, this ratio, following natural progression, is a precursor to growth in the market, said Arnold Balao, Sony Philippines deputy director for home audio-video marketing. "This shows that someday HD will be very big in the Philippines," added Balao.

According to Kobayashi, the Philippine audio-visual market is currently estimated at P20 billion (US$411.3 million), with Sony taking 28 percent of the market share in the last fiscal year. The Sony president believes that the big screen TV segment and the Bravia brand will continue to fuel the company's growth in the local market. "We also hope to see good growth in the handycam segment," he added.
