Philippine IT group mulls computer literacy standard

10.04.2006
The Commission on Information and Communication Technology (CICT) plans to create a computer literacy standard among local universities and colleges to meet the anticipated inflow of 'cyberservices' jobs in the Philippines.

This literacy standard applies not only to students but to teachers as well, said Damian Mapa, CICT commissioner and head of the commission's Strategic Business Development group (1mjobs.blogspot.com).

Cyberservices refers to services delivered over the Internet such as customer contact, animation, software development, medical transcription, and back-office processing.

'All cyberservices jobs, whether they are voice service-type or non-voice like software development or animation, there is one skill required and that is computer literacy,' Mapa said in an interview with Computerworld Philippines.

According to Mapa, by year 2010 or sooner, all college graduates should have a fair amount of ICT competency and students will not be allowed to graduate without it.
