Philippine gov't pushes for IPv6 adoption

The Philippine government is pushing for the adoption of newer Internet technologies, particularly Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6).

'We're pushing for the adoption of IPv6, especially in the government, because with RFID (radio frequency identification) technology and almost all objects now needing IP addresses, IPv6 is really the future of Internet technology,' said Commission on Information and Communication Technology (CICT) commissioner Angelo Timoteo Diaz de Rivera.

IPv6 is designed to exponentially increase the number of IP addresses over a network. The IPv4 is a 30-year old technology that is still widely used today, said Lawrence Hughes, a Silicon Valley veteran and founder and chief technology officer of local ICT company InfoWeapons, during an IPv6 forum organized by the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT).
