Oracle eyes embedded systems market in Asia-Pacific

Software maker Oracle Corp. is gunning after the embedded systems market in Asia-Pacific, citing market potential in countries like the Philippines that are embracing new technologies like 3G and radio frequency identification (RFID).

In a recent briefing in Singapore, Oracle announced it has created an Embedded Business Unit for Asia Pacific and Japan. Through this unit, Oracle is looking to forge licensing agreements with independent software vendors (ISVs) and manufacturers of handsets and other end-user devices.

Embedded systems are powered by special microprocessors and use software that operate specific devices such as automated teller machines. Oracle plans to make a play in this segment by embedding its products, including its core database, in applications that run on these devices.
