Office for Mac updated for Retina displays

Mac users who labor away on a machine with a Retina display are about to enjoy some much sharper looking spreadsheets and presentations.

On Wednesday, that delivers Retina-display support for the applications that make up Office for Mac 2011. With the 14.2.4 update, Microsoft says that Office users on a Mac equipped with a Retina display--currently, that's just two models--will enjoy crisper text and a sharper interface.

That's not the only change promised in the , which also describe a number of improvements to Outlook for Mac 2011. Specifically, the updated version of Outlook now displays reminders of calendar events for all calendars; previously, it only showed reminders for events in the default account's calendar. You can also now select a default text encoding for composing new messages in Preferences -> Composing.

Other additions to Outlook for Mac include an updated HTML syntax for new signatures that's compatible with Mountain Lion and the latest version of WebKit, improved handling of downloaded messages, stability improvements, and other assorted bug fixes.

Available via Microsoft AutoUpdate feature as well as through , the 14.2.4 update to Office for Mac 2011 requires OS X 10.5.8; you'll also need to be running the 14.1 version of Office before you can install the new update.
