NXP Semiconductors has strategically collaborated with Google to provide a complete open source software stack for Near Field Communications (NFC).

As per the deal, the NFC stack will be completely integrated and validated on the latest version of the Android platform known as Gingerbread.

NXP's NFC controller (PN544) has also been integrated into Google's newly released Nexus S phone. Co-developed by Google and Samsung, this mobile device offers users access to compelling NFC based services and applications.

NXP notes that these announcements deliver the richness of NFC to the consumer and developer and device manufacturing communities all around the world.

Android is growing in popularity in the smartphone and mobile device world and currently has more than 100,000 applications and an extensive community of developers. According to NXP, developers are now able to access an open source NFC implementation, and the company will thus help drive the development of new applications that extend the touch interface of mobile applications beyond the devices screen.
