Microsoft buys migration app firm

Microsoft Corp. has acquired Apptimum Inc., gaining technology that helps Windows users more easily migrate applications from old PCs to new ones. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Apptimum makes the Alohabob PC Relocator tool, which allows users to transfer applications to new machines without having to reinstall them. The Apptimum's technology will initially be offered as an optional download for Windows Vista.

Atempo acquires CDP software maker

Atempo Inc., a maker of data backup and recovery software, has acquired Storactive Inc., a privately held developer of continuous data protection software. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Atempo said it will maintain Storactive's facilities in Marina del Rey, Calif., and Moscow. Prior to the deal, Atempo was a reseller of Storactive's LiveBackup and LiveServ products.

IBM, Cognos sign SOA tools deal

IBM has signed a joint development and marketing pact with Cognos Inc. for service-oriented architecture products. The deal also calls for the two companies to continue work on integrating IBM middleware and Cognos business intelligence software, and to undertake additional vertical product integration projects.
