Newport rolls out global MPLS network

09.03.2007
Technology manufacturer and research firm Newport Corporation has completed a global multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) network rollout for its 2000 access nodes across the Asia Pacific, Europe and North America.

The network was implemented by telecommunications vendor BT Infonet to increase bandwidth between its fourteen global sites, and to assist with an SAP enterprise resource planning (ERP) project.

Newport Corporation director of global IT infrastructure, Dan Hedstrom, said the technology has boosted network speeds which assisted the ERP project implementation.

"The MPLS service has significantly increased our network's performance and the implementation process of consolidating 14 different ERP systems has been very smooth," Hedstrom said.

"Increasing bandwidth has been especially important to the SAP rollout. BT Infonet's customer care has been very impressive as they have delivered a high level of service for all our facilities and their cost services have been a great value-add for us."

BT Americas president and chief operating officer (COO), Chuck Pol, said the project's varied implementation phases were different from typical projects.
