MS kills Equipt, no info on future Office subscription plans

24.02.2009
Microsoft is terminating Equipt, a subscription-based service that combined office, communication and security software.

The that the service, which was launched just last July, will be discontinued on April 30, 2009. Windows Live OneCare, which is a part of Equipt, will also be discontinued, according to the company.

As compensation, subscribers will receive a prorated refund for the unused portion of their Equipt subscription. They are also being offered a free copy of Office Home and Student 2007.

So far Microsoft's decision has gone without protest and the blogosphere response has been apathetic. The company declined to disclose how many units of Equipt were sold.

"Equipt was well-received by both our customers and partners and sales were in line with our expectations," a company spokesperson told the The Industry Standard.

The company also dodged a question about whether an Equipt-like model might ever be offered again.
