Joost to shutter standalone app on Friday

Joost has announced that this Friday is the final day users will be able to use the standalone Joost client to watch online videos.

An email sent to users Wednesday notes that users can now watch video via the browser-based service. "At this point, we have decided to discontinue our original Joost software application," the email states.

The online video service was established by the co-founders of Skype and Kazaa, and launched to great fanfare in 2007. The standalone Joost application had support from major movie studios and television broadcasters, but for buggy behavior and going against the browser-based video models established by Hulu and YouTube. Joost began in early September. The browser-based service formally debuted in October.
