IBM introduces social network for developers

06.07.2009
Taking off from the popularity of social networking sites such as Friendster and Facebook, computer manufacturer IBM introduced on Saturday its own collaborative portal targeted especially at software developers.

Dubbed , the new portal, IBM said, builds upon the existing user base of its current developer content website called developerWorks. IBM said it is looking to increase online engagement with developers to aid in the progress of local development industries around the world.

"Our challenge right now is helping developers get what they want, when they want it, in the way they want it delivered. And that's what we're trying to achieve with MydeveloperWorks," said Charles Manuel, ASEAN program director, IBM.

Manuel said the site extension can help developers personalize content in their own landing page, gain access to programs and codes available on the site, and collaborate with like-minded developers not only in their region but in the whole world as well.

"The tools available today should be in line with what the people--in this case developers--want," said Manuel, adding that through MydeveloperWorks, they would be able to open the doors to other sectors as well, such as IT professionals, government and the academe.

"Developers can use this [resource] to get recognized by the global IT community and easily find technical resources they need to succeed in their field," he added.
