HTC's Bootloader Unlock Tool Gets Closer, But Has Catch

04.08.2011
In June, HTC announced that , and that future devices could have their bootloaders unlocked via a software upgrade. However, there was no word as to whether older devices could be unlocked by their owners.

Just today (Wednesday), HTC posted on their that later this month, unlocking support for the HTC Sensation will be provided via a software update, with support for the HTC Sensation 4G and HTC EVO 3D to follow soon.

While new devices will not shipped with unlocked bootloaders, a soon-to-be-released web tool will allow phone owners to unlock their devices by registering for an account and "accept[ing] legal disclaimers that unlocking may void all or parts of your warranty." Doesn't sound very encouraging, does it? The unlocking process will also require that you have the Android SDK to get a device token to plug into the web app. You'll then be emailed the unlocking key and will be able to unlock your phone! Phew

No word from HTC as to when in August this tool will appear in the wild, but we'll let you know.
