Gamescom: Payday: The Heist Launches on October 5 for $20

19.08.2011
$20 is pretty expensive for a PSN game, but Sony Online Entertainment and developer Overkill believe that they've created a game that's worth the money. Featuring six maps, 144 reputation (experience) levels, drop in/drop out cooperative play and a variety of skills to unlock, certainly doesn't skimp on incentives to replay.

It plays well, too. Cooperation is key when dealing with the various situations that arise during a robbery -- and especially when things go wrong, as they inevitably will. But the best thing about the game is the fact that it's not your average shooter -- in fact, on certain levels it's theoretically possible to complete the entire heist without having to kill anyone. Multiple solutions means considerable replayability -- a good thing if you're hoping to work your way through those 144 levels.

The whole game can be played with one to four players, with or without AI partners to fill in the gaps in your roster. There's also a selection of difficulty modes. The hardest of these -- "Overkill" -- is named after the developer because apparently even they can't beat it. You can guarantee that within a week of release some upstart will have uploaded a speedrun solo run to YouTube, however.

Overkill is waiting to see how the community responds to the game and its price before determining whether to proceed with a DLC plan. You'll be able to make your own mind up from October 5, when the game becomes available via Steam and PSN.
