Gamescom: Namco Wants You to See Tekken Blood Vengeance in 3D

17.08.2011
Tekken Blood Vengeance is a new 3D CG movie that Namco is very excited about. So much so, in fact, that not one but two upcoming Tekken products will give you the opportunity to watch it in the way it was intended -- 3D.

for PS3 comes on a single Blu-Ray disc. It includes the movie in glorious 3D high definition for those who want to watch it on the big screen, and also copies of Tekken Tag Tournament HD and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Prologue, featuring Blood Vengeance content made specifically for the game.

Tekken Tag Tournament HD looks surprisingly good -- series director Katsuhiro Harada admitted that when the original game was release Namco hadn't quite found its feet with developing for the PS2, and consequently had used far more polygons than they needed to in rendering Tag Tournament's characters. The fortunate side-effect of this, however, is that the characters still look great in HD. And unlike some HD rereleases (we're looking at you here, Sega) the 2D art has also been revamped at the higher resolution. Besides that, it's Tekken Tag Tournament as it's always been -- complete with bowling minigame.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Prologue is a cut down version of the upcoming Tekken Tag Tournament 2, as you probably already guessed. Featuring four characters from Blood Vengeance along with 3DTV support, it looks pretty impressive -- though it still does that weird thing with the backgrounds that Tekken's always done, where there's a very obvious dividing line between the 3D fighting arena and the 2D backdrop. It looks pretty good in 3D -- though as usual the resolution is lower, it flickers a bit and the frame rate isn't quite as slick.

Alongside Tekken Hybrid, Namco is also planning to release Tekken 3D Prime Edition, which includes not only a whole new Tekken game for 3DS, but also the full Tekken Blood Vengeance movie in 3D. Okay, you have to watch it on the 3DS' tiny 3D screen, but being able to watch it on the go will make fans happy -- not to mention the fact that squeezing a 90 minute 3D movie and a full game onto a Nintendo 3DS cartridge is quite an impressive achievement.

That's not the only impressive achievement in Tekken 3D, though -- Namco has also managed to get the gameplay running in 3D at 60 frames per second. With many 3D titles -- 3DS or otherwise -- the framerate takes a hit in 3D due to having to render twice as much graphical information. But Namco are very pleased with the fact that they've managed to get the game up and running in full 3D at its full frame rate.
