Female IT businesses in South Africa to get support

03.07.2006
The Cape IT Initiative (CITI) in South Africa has launched phase two of its Women in ICT project. It is calling for all female-owned ICT businesses in the Western Cape to participate in a capacity building project, which will see one company receiving R110,000 (US$15,455) and a full year of proactive business and mentorship support. In addition, nineteen other companies will be supported and promoted for six months.

"This project is not about demographics, it is about opportunity," says Viola Manuel, executive director of CITI, when discussing the purpose of this programme. "Too often it is confidence that holds women back from achieving in this sector. Our project will support, mentor and coach women to success, showing them and others that anything is possible."

As with all CITI projects, job creation is also an objective. "Successful businesses create jobs and this project will produce sustainable, financially stable companies. In fact, one of our key selection criteria is that the business must have a business plan that reflects the potential to create employment within 12 months. We are keen to see individuals succeed, but we are even more excited about the prospect of companies growing," says Manuel.
