Del Toro's Illinois visit sparks game director rumor

09.11.2010
For quite some time, rumors have circulated the industry regarding famed movie director Guillermo Del Toro taking the reigns of a THQ project. Del Toro's recent visit to Volition's home city of Champaign, Illinois has fueled the fire even further.

A pair of news reports seem to have solidified Guillermo Del Toro's status within THQ. The first bit of news comes by way of a report on a Champaign-based blog called that noted Del Toro (the director of the Hellboy series and Pan's Labyrinth) was currently visiting the city. Said bit of information is quite notable in that it's the headquarters for one of THQ's largest studios -- Saints Row and Red Faction franchise developer Volition.

Meanwhile, THQ's executive vice president of core content Danny Bilson has promised during this past Friday's IGDA Leadership Forum that more information regarding "a big film director who is actually a big gamer" will be revealed at this year's Spike Video Game Awards. While the mid-December-set awards show traditionally limits its reveals to teaser trailers, it's possible this unique collaboration may come to light on stage.

GamePro has reached out to THQ for further details regarding Del Toro's status with the company, but we have not received a reply as of yet. We'll keep you updated on Del Toro's involvement with THQ and the VGAs as new information comes our way.
