CORRECTION - Chicago Elections Board sued over data breach

30.01.2007
Due to a reporting error, the stories, "Chicago Elections Board sued over data breach," from Computerworld (US online) and "Chicago Board of Elections faces charges over breach" from Computerworld (US), posted to the wire Wednesday and Monday respectively, incorrectly referred to the Chicago Board of Elections' fix of Social Security numbers from personal records in public view and on mainframe systems. The election board removed the Social Security numbers of personal information from public view entirely and then deleted all but the last four digits of the numbers stored in their mainframe systems.

The first sentence in the 11th paragraph of both stories has been modified, and the paragraphs respectively read:

Since that disclosure, the board has removed the Social Security numbers from public view and deleted all but the last four digits of the numbers from its mainframe records, Allen said. It also hired a local firm, Grant Thornton LLP, to help deal with data security and storage issues as well as the control and dissemination of data.

The board has since removed the Social Security numbers from public view and deleted all but the last four digits of the numbers from its mainframe records, Allen said. It also hired Grant Thornton LLP, a Chicago-based auditing and business consulting firm, to help it with data security, storage and control issues.
