Consumer Reports: New iPad Can Reach 116 Degrees While Gaming; Apple Responds

20.03.2012
Complaints about the temperature of Apple's new third-generation iPad are heating up, with Consumer Reports claiming that the tablet reaches temperatures of up to 116 degrees Fahrenheit while a user plays games.

follow an earlier thermal imaging test by Dutch site , which found that the new iPad reached temperatures of 92.5 degrees Fahrenheit after five minutes of running a GLBenchmark test.

According to Consumer Reports, which also used thermal imaging, the new iPad reached 116 degrees Fahrenheit after 45 minutes of running the game Infinity Blade II. In this test, the iPad was plugged in and propped up with a Smart Cover, Wi-Fi was on, 4G was off, and the room temperature was about 72 degrees.

Even with the new iPad unplugged, it reached temperatures of 113 degrees Fahrenheit in Consumer Reports' thermal imaging test--13 degrees hotter than the iPad 2 while running the same test. In both tests, the heat was concentrated in one spot.

Still, it's unclear whether Consumer Reports will slap the new iPad with the same "not recommended" rating that it due to the phone's antenna issues. In a blog post, Consumer Reports' Donna Tapellini didn't seem too put off by the tablet's temperature.
