CommVault tackles information lifecycle management

01.12.2005
CommVault announced more features in the forthcoming upgrade of its data-management product, QiNetix, with ILM (information lifecycle management) capabilities among the features added to the suite.

QiNetix 6.1, due by the end of the year, will provide ILM services with two applications. Data Migrator is a policy-driven shuttle capable of moving data between heterogeneous storage devices, and Data Classification Enabler is an agent that creates and automatically updates a catalog of customers' files. That catalog contains attributes such as group, creation date and ownership to give customers a better understanding of the business relevance of those files, according to CommVault.

Administrators can refer to those attributes when creating policies to drive automated moves using Data Migrator or backup applications.

The new version of QiNetix will also support a wider range of storage devices, which should enable a multitier architecture on a variety of reference media from multiple vendors, said Brian Brockway, director of data management products at CommVault.

Customers deploying ILM with QiNetix should add US$2,000 per server for Data Migrator and $1,000 per server for Data Enabler.
