China resistant to adopting sustainable policies

Businesses in China plan to reduce carbon emissions but are resistant to adopting more sustainable policies, according to research carried out by China's Tsinghua University Media Survey Lab on behalf of Alcatel-Lucent.

About 39 percent of businesses in China intend to reduce carbon emissions by 1-20 percent within the next three to five years but have not adopted more sustainable policies as they think it will demand high capital, time and human resource investment requirements.

Professionals working in the Chinese information and communications technology (ICT) industry are not sure how to use technology to achieve carbon reduction targets despite that fact that most Chinese companies are aware of green ICT initiatives.

Fifty-nine percent of the companies surveyed had a plan to go green themselves and more than 90 percent believed that technology can help develop low-carbon economy through the reduction of energy consumption and stimulating society to reduce greenhouse gas emissions further.

Most ICT professionals in China believe green technology to be an important part of an enterprise's social responsibility.
