Boulder Dash Returning Soon to PC and XBLA

27.05.2011
Boulder Dash is one of the oldest puzzle games there is, and its original development company is bringing an all-new version to the 360 and PC.

1984's Boulder Dash took the digging and block-dropping mechanic of Dig Dug and built a brain-frying puzzle game around it. Protagonist Rockford was tasked with collecting a certain number of diamonds per level and then finding the exit. The twist was that through digging his way to the diamonds, Rockford could easily dislodge deadly boulders and enemies, either killing him outright or in some immensely frustrating cases, blocking his way to the exit. Quick thinking and forward planning was necessary for success.

Now, original developer First Star Software, in collaboration with Catnip Games and publisher Kalypso Media Group, is bringing an all-new Boulder Dash game to the PC and Xbox Live Arcade. The official trailer says it's the first sequel to the original game, though that's not quite true -- the Boulder Dash series has seen 16 releases across 15 platforms since 1984. The new game features 5 game modes and 4 worlds to explore across 150 individual levels, along with the requisite support for online leaderboards and achievements. Fans of the original game will appreciate the inclusion of a "Retro Mode," which features the original game's super-pixelated graphics with 25 brand new levels to beat.

There's no official release date yet but the footage on display looks pretty much complete, so watch out for it on Xbox Live Arcade and PC soon.
