Police in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) has begun the first stage of its mainframe replacement program with a A$14 million (US$10.5 million) contract to replace the decade-old Computer Incident Dispatch System.

The State Contracts Control Board has approved a contract with Fujitsu Australia for the supply and installation of a new computer aided dispatch (CAD) system.

The new CAD system is slated to facilitate the management of triple-0 emergency calls, including call recording, and will integrate real-time graphical displays to allow mapping with locality and intelligence.

Access to more detailed resource information is aimed at improving the effectiveness of decision-making by law enforcement officers.

CAD project director, Superintendent Dave Johnson, said NSW Police is working to ensure the system's rollout is as seamless and close to problem-free as possible.

"Large IT projects can be difficult to implement, both technically and from a change management perspective," Johnson said. "We are working with Fujitsu to ensure the system is fully tested and those using it properly trained before we go live."
